Right in the middle of the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, and France lies a small nation best known to most WW2 buffs as Hitler's doormat to France (the route Hitler took as he bypassed the Maginot Line), and often referred to as "the battlefield of Europe." Many wars have been faught on its soil, including the Battle of the Ardennes in WWI, the Battle of France, and the Battle of the Bulge in WW2. It has been dominated for much of its history, a campground of the Merovingians, Carolingians, and the Romans. Charles V even called it his for a while, and France once "annexed" it. (Yes, France!) Only during a brief period during the late 1800's did it enjoy any real influence, and that was granted by the Berlin Conference, rather than won.
